GIA Diamond Reports: What Buyers Should Check
GIA created the 4Cs framework and provides grading services used throughout the diamond trade. The important skill for a shopper is knowing how to translate a report into questions about the actual stone.
Start with report identity
Confirm the report number, date, shape and cutting style, measurements and carat weight. GIA Report Check allows consumers to confirm that report information matches GIA's archived data.
Read the 4Cs together
Color and clarity are rarity descriptors; carat is weight; cut information describes workmanship and, for eligible standard round brilliants, overall cut quality. Do not treat four separate grades as one combined score.
Use the proportions diagram
Table, depth, crown, pavilion, girdle and culet information can help you compare geometry. The values interact, so avoid rejecting a diamond because one number falls outside a retailer's preferred range.
Read comments and clarity information
Comments can disclose details that are easy to miss in search filters. Where a plotted clarity diagram is included, it maps observed clarity characteristics and can help you understand their location.
