Diamond Fluorescence: A Report Detail, Not a Verdict
Fluorescence describes visible light emitted by some diamonds when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. It is reported separately from the 4Cs and should be evaluated in context.
How fluorescence is reported
GIA reports fluorescence strength in categories that include None, Faint, Medium, Strong and Very Strong, along with the observed color when relevant. Blue is common, but other colors can occur.
Does fluorescence make a diamond look cloudy?
Strong fluorescence does not automatically mean a diamond looks hazy or oily. If a stone has strong or very strong fluorescence, the sensible approach is visual inspection under several lighting conditions. Do not reject it based on the report line alone.
Can fluorescence affect apparent color?
Blue fluorescence can sometimes influence perceived appearance in lighting rich in ultraviolet energy, particularly for diamonds with warmer body color. The effect varies and should not be treated as a guaranteed improvement.
