Diamond Carat Weight: Weight Is Not the Same as Size
Carat measures mass. Your eye sees dimensions. Two diamonds with the same carat weight can face up differently because shape and proportions distribute that weight in different ways.
What a carat measures
One carat equals 200 milligrams. Carat weight is measured very precisely, but it does not tell you how wide or long a diamond looks from the top.
Why two 1.00 ct diamonds can look different
A deeper diamond can carry more of its weight vertically, while a shallower or elongated shape may show more surface area. That is why the measurements printed on a grading report matter. Compare millimetres, not only the carat number.
Magic weights and pricing
Demand often clusters around familiar milestone weights such as 0.50, 1.00, 1.50 and 2.00 carats. Diamonds just below a milestone can sometimes offer similar visual size at a lower price, provided the cut is not compromised.
Do not chase spread at any cost
An unusually shallow diamond may look wider but sacrifice attractive light performance. A very deep stone may hide weight. The better goal is an appealing balance between dimensions, cut and budget.
