IGI Diamond Reports: How to Use the Information
IGI is a major gemological laboratory with a large presence in jewelry and laboratory-grown diamond grading. As with any report, buyers should evaluate the data, verify the report and inspect the actual diamond.
What to compare on an IGI report
- Report number and date
- Natural or laboratory-grown identification
- Shape, measurements and carat weight
- Color and clarity grades
- Cut-related grades or proportions where reported
- Polish, symmetry and fluorescence
- Comments, inscriptions and any disclosed treatments
Do not compare laboratory names in isolation
A buyer ultimately pays for a specific diamond. Compare actual measurements, visual appearance, report details, return policy and price. When comparing stones graded by different laboratories, be especially disciplined about like-for-like comparison.
Lab-grown shopping
IGI reports are common in the laboratory-grown market. Make sure the listing and report clearly identify the diamond as laboratory-grown and review any information about growth method or post-growth treatment when provided.
