How to Read a GIA Diamond Report
A GIA report is easiest to understand when you read it in layers: identity first, the 4Cs second, proportions and finish third, then comments and clarity information.
Confirm report identity
Match the report number, date, shape and cutting style, measurements and carat weight to the retailer listing. Use GIA Report Check to verify the archived report data.
Read the 4Cs separately
Carat is mass. Color and clarity describe rarity-related characteristics. Cut information describes workmanship and light-performance factors where applicable. Do not treat the grades as one composite score.
Study proportions and finish
Table, depth, crown, pavilion, girdle and culet information help describe geometry. Polish and symmetry are finish grades. Their meaning depends on the whole stone, not isolated numbers.
Read comments and clarity information
Comments may contain details not visible in retailer filters. A plotting diagram, where included, helps map clarity characteristics and can assist identification.
